For this month, I am recommending the book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel Pink.
Everyone has heard the phrase “timing is everything”. I would have to say that the “right timing” has been a major contributor in most of my business successes. For example, when I started out in business in the 70’s, the model of network marketing was relatively new. The concept of putting crushed spices and herbs in gelatin capsules then selling them commercially was a revolutionary idea. When my partners and I coupled these 2 ideas together, it created a successful company that is still around today. This also developed into future financial resources and business savvy that became my platform to found other successful companies and invest in other businesses. Perhaps the best moment of perfect timing in my life was when as a young college student, I accepted an opportunity to teach a class and met my wonderful wife Linda, who was a student in the class.
One of the most valuable tools I gained from my military experience is the skill for making command decisions at the right time. A command decision is making a quick, decisive decision knowing that very important things are on the line and in the military that often means people’s lives. In my opinion, the best decision is a quick, correct one; the next best decision is a bad one; and the worst possible decision is not making one at all.
Hopefully, by reading this book you will gain some valuable insights into making the best decisions at the right time to help you be successful in all areas of your life.
Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when” decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about the person you are dating…Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork.
Timing, it’s often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.
Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? Why should we avoid going to the hospital in the afternoon? Why is singing in time with other people as good for you as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?
In When, Pink distills cutting-edge research and data on timing and synthesizes them into a fascinating, readable narrative packed with irresistible stories and practical takeaways that give readers compelling insights into how we can live richer, more engaged lives.
